NGC2359 – Thor's Helmet Nebula

NGC2359, known as Thor's Helmet Nebula, is an emission nebula in the constellation Canis Major, about 12,000 light-years away. It is a stellar-wind bubble with an angular size of about 30 arcminutes including its long appendages, and a visual magnitude of +11.5. Its structure results from outer layers of gas expelled and shaped at high speed by the intense winds of a massive Wolf-Rayet star at an evolutionary stage preceding its explosion as a supernova.
